Title:
Distributed Acoustic Sensing and Applications

Abstract:
This talk introduces the technology of Distributed Acoustics Sensing (DAS), which is using Fibre-optic (FO) cable as an acoustic array to sense the environment.
DAS has wide range of applications due to high spatial and temporal resolution and economic benefit by using existing dark or telecom FO cables on land, along railways and on the seafloor. The applications of DAS technology are presented. Theory on interface waves is shown. An example on using DAS data to estimate shear wave velocity profile in the upper part of the sediments is given, which involves data processing, estimating interface wave dispersion curves and geoacoustic inversion.

Short Bio:
Hefeng Dong received a B.Sc. (1983) in Physics and M.Sc. (1986) in Theoretical Physics from Northeast Normal University, Changchun, China, respectively and a Ph.D. in Geoacoustics in 1994 from Jilin University, Changchun, China. From 1986 to 1994, she was a lecture of physics at the Northeast Normal University, China where she was associate professor from 1995 to 2000. She was visiting scholar and postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway from 1999 to 2001. From 2001 to 2002 she worked as a research scientist at the SINTEF Petroleum Research, Norway. Since 2002 she has been Professor in Acoustic Remote Sensing at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. She was on sabbatical leave with the Underwater Acoustics Laboratory, University of Victoria, Canada, the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, University of Delaware, USA, and the Laboratory of Mechanics and Acoustics, France in the periods of 200
8-2009, 2014-2015, and 2019-2020, respectively. Now she is working with Prof. Michael Taroudakis at the University of Crete for her six-month sabbatical. Her research interests include wave propagation in elastic and poroelastic media and numerical modelling, Acoustic remote sensing, geoacoustic modelling and inversion, passive acoustics, distributed acoustics sensing, and underwater acoustic communication. Dr. Dong is a member of the Acoustical Society of America and IEEE.
