Title: Estimation of ambient noise and ship source levels from experimental data in Tainaron Cape
Abstract: In this talk we will present the work done during our three months internship at IACM-FORTH. Our project was to estimate ambient noise and ship source levels from data collected by a hydrophone deployed in the Tainaron Cape area in July 2024. The results of this experiment could be helpful in the context of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, which invites all European Union members to monitor maritime anthropogenic noise within the 63 and 125 Hz octave bands. Spike-like components and fadings due to experimental disturbances required appropriate processing of the raw signal: after implementing a mean-based filter, ambient noise values were found between 80 and 91 dB for the 63 Hz band and between 77 and 85 dB for the 125 Hz band. To calculate source levels of passing ships, traffic situations are depicted with a Python program decoding AIS messages. Two signal-to-noise ratios, with respect to background noise and nearby disturbing ships, are used to quantify whether a particular recording period is suitable for source level estimation. Source spectra are computed using a Matlab program: transmission losses are first calculated under the spherical spreading assumption, and then using the Kraken normal modes software. Results are finally compared with the JOMOPANS-ECHO spectrum model.
Short Bio: Albéric de TALANCÉ After three years of preparatory class in Mathematics and Physics to prepare for the entrance exams to France's top engineering schools at Lycée Sainte-Geneviève in Versailles (GPA: 3.88/4), he chose to attend the French Naval Academy (École Navale). There, he completed a multidisciplinary curriculum, encompassing maritime training (preparation for the officer of the watch certificate), military training (firearms, parachuting, and basic infantry combat), and general engineering with a focus on underwater acoustics in his first year of the Master's program. He is currently at FORTH as part of his final-year internship. Calixte LACOMBE He obtained his French High School diploma with a major in Sciences and distinction in 2020. Following this, he attended the CPGE program (Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles) in MPSI and PSI* at Lycée Saint-Louis, Paris, from 2020 to 2022, where he prepared for the national competitive entrance exams to France's leading 'grandes écoles,' specializing in mathematics and physics. In 2022, he joined the French Naval Academy (École Navale).
