Title:
Calculation of the eigenfrequencies of the laboratory’s experimental water tank

Abstract:
The study of acoustic eigenmodes in water-filled tanks provides insight into sound propagation in confined environments, which is crucial for certain applications, such as experimental bioacoustics. In this project, eigenfrequencies of the water tank of IACM’s Laboratory were calculated from experimental data collected using a source in a fixed position and a hydrophone moving at several position inside the tank.
Dominant spectral components were identified and matched to the theoretical modes. Initial discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental results prompted an inverse problem approach to refine physical and geometric parameters, including tank wall density and thickness, sound velocity, and damping factor. This optimization significantly reduced the relative error and improved the detection rate. The methodology offers a robust framework for validating acoustic models in confined media and underscores the critical importance of precise material and geometric characterization.
In this talk the theoretical background for the calculation of the eigenfrequencies will be explained along with results of two experiment with two different positions of the source. Then an inverse procedure on the theoretical parameters will be presented and the results obtained will be discussed.

Short Bio:
Théo RAILLOT
He obtained his French High School diploma in Sciences in 2020. Then he joined the preparatory class in Physics and Chemistry, at Lycée Militaire d’Aix-en-Provence, for 3 years, where he prepared for the national entrance in the French engineering and military schools. In 2023, he joined the French Naval Academy, following military instructions, maritime training and formations to be a navy officier specialized in Energy and Propulsion. He focused his engineering degree on underwater acoustic and is currently at FORTH-IACM as part of his final-year internship.

Jade LEMARCHAND
After she graduated from the French High School diploma of “Baccalauréat” in sciences with High Honnors in 2020, she attended the preparatory course in physics and engineering sciences at Lycée Saint-Louis, Paris, from 2020 to 2023, to prepare the national entrance exams to Engineering schools. In 2023, she joined the French Naval Academy (Ecole Navale) where she completed a multidisciplinary
curriculum: maritime training for the officer of the watch certificate, military training and general engineering with a major in underwater acoustics.
